The Lonely Voice: Short Story Introductions
At the Irish Writers’ Centre we are committed to supporting writers at every stage of their development. With this in mind, we are delighted to present a monthly event for emerging writers.
The Lonely Voice: Short Story Introductions will take place on the last Wednesday of every month. Up to four short story writers will be selected and invited to read their work at the event. We are particularly interested in providing a platform for emerging writers, who previously may not have had the opportunity to read their work in public.
The deadline for the September reading is Friday 27th August and the event itself will take place on Wednesday 29th September at 7pm here at the Irish Writers’ Centre. The event is free, so come along to hear the very best of this month’s submissions.
Please send the short story you would like to read (max 3,000 words and limited to one entry per person per month) and a short bio to: thelonelyvoice@gmail.com. Please attach bios and stories separately and make sure they are in .doc format. Your name should not appear on the story.

Abridged 0 – 21: Magnolia Submission Call: poetry and art
In the world of colour charts and iconic English sheepdogs, Magnolia represents the fence-sitting hue that neither offends or accosts the senses. Adorning the walls of TurnKey packaged homes of first-time buyers or haunting the corners of final destination rest homes of howls and despair, Magnolia stalks us from the cradle to the grave. It is the bastard offspring of white: it is the disgraced sibling of beige. It is nothingness yet it is everywhere. It is Abridged 0 – 21.
Abridged, the poetry/art magazine is looking for submissions for its Magnolia issue. A maximum of 3 poems may be submitted of any length. Art can be up to A4 size and can be in any media. It should be at least 300 dpi. Submissions can be emailed to abridged@ymail.com or posted to: Abridged c/o The Verbal Arts Centre, Stable Lane and Mall Wall, Bishop Street Within, Derry BT48 6PU. Closing date for submission is May 21st.

Accepting submissions throughout February only
The Redheaded Stepchild only accepts poems that have been rejected by other magazines. We publish biannually, and we accept submissions in the months of February and August only. We do not accept previously published work. We do, however, accept simultaneous submissions, but please inform us immediately if your work is accepted somewhere else. We are open to a wide variety of poetry and hold no allegiance to any particular style or school. If your poem is currently displayed online on your blog or website or wherever, please do not send it to us before taking it down, at least temporarily.

We do not want multiple submissions, so please wait for a response to your first submission before you submit again. As is standard after publication, rights revert back to the author, but we request that you credit Redheaded Stepchild in subsequent republications.
We do not accept email attachments; therefore, in the body of your email, please include the following:
· a brief bio
· 3-5 poems

Novella
January 15
Library of Science Fiction & Fantasy Press
Distant Worlds, an anthology of novella length Science Fiction
Shame we don’t include an ‘In Your Dreams’ Category - entry fee $100…
‘The novella is often neglected in modern genre fiction. Too short to print as a novel and too long for most short story markets, a novella has room for a lot of richness and growth, for fully realized characters, settings, and societies, and for concepts and ideas that just won’t fit into a short story but may not be big enough or complex enough for a novel. The Novella has the potential to deliver incredible stories. We believe very strongly in that potential and invite you to help us find it.
The details: While definitions may vary depending on where you look, for the purpose of this anthology, a novella will have a length of somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 words.
Your submission must be in standard manuscript format and attached to your e-mail as an rtf file.
Payment for inclusion in this anthology will be $100, two contributor’s copies of the book, and the everlasting knowledge of being involved in something special.
Submissions are now open and will close on 15 Jan 2010. This is a fairly large window, but we recognize the size and scope of a novella can require a great deal more time than a short story. If you don’t have one ready to go, we’d like to give you a chance to w
Submissions and Queries should be sent to; distanteditor@gmail.com with *Submission – Distant Worlds* or *Query – Distant Worlds* in the subject line, as applicable.
Caveats: There are a lot of themes that have been overdone in SF. Strange Horizons provides a wonderfully detailed (yet certainly incomplete) list of overused themes and plots at; http://strangehorizons.com/guidelines/fiction-common.shtml . We’re not saying don’t do it, but if you’ve picked something from this list as your main focus, try to stand it on its head.
Because there is only room for 4 or 5 stories in Distant Worlds, submissions will be taken in two stages, building a shortlist of possible inclusions. Rejections will happen, but final decisions on acceptances won’t be made until ALL submissions have been read.
The speculative elements you choose, whatever they are, must be integral to the story. If you can write the same story without them, then it’s not a genre story. That said, we subscribe to the Damon Knight theory of Science Fiction: Science Fiction is what we point to when we say it. Every story will be read. If you believe in yours, please send it.’
