Debt Free - Poetry to inspire action –
A poetry competition about debt
Inspired by a poem by Paul Laurence Dunbar called The Debt, Talk About Debt are running a poetry competition to find this century’s ‘Debt Poem’.
One of the biggest issues people in debt face is acceptance. Often people bury their heads in the sand, but once they do reach out for help they find there is a way out, there is a future where being debt free is a reality as opposed to a pipe dream. The need for words that inspire action and optimism have never been so great with repossessions and bankruptcies at a record high.
What type of poems are we looking for?
Poems about accepting you’re in debt and the need to take positive actions to become debt free
Poems about not hiding from problems and asking for help
Poems about the different debt solutions available
All other inspirational ‘Debt Free’ ideas welcome. The first prize for the best and most inspiring poem is £300. Second Prize is £200, and Third Prize £100. Entries must be with us no later than 31st October 2008. Full details and how to enter are on and via the website at; http://www.talkaboutdebt.co.uk/community/2008/09/debt-free-poetry-to-inspire-action/

RAL SHORT STORY COMPETITION
Rape and Abuse Line, located in Dingwall, have announced an open writing competition with cash prizes which will run from 1 July until 31 October 2008 and it is anticipated that it will attract short story writers from all over the UK. The story subject matter will be open to the writers’ imagination but each and every story must start with the words ‘If it hadn’t been for that telephone call……’ The follow on story can be about anything at all but it should be stimulating, entertaining, humorous, thought provoking or simply a good read and must be between 1500 and 1800 words in length.
The competition is being sponsored by the David St John Thomas Charitable Writing Trust, based in Nairn, with £350 in cash to be won and smaller prizes donated by Borders and Boots in Inverness for the best story submitted by a writer from that area and a prize donated by Tesco in Dingwall for the best story submitted by a Dingwall writer.
Rape and Abuse Line are launching the competition to raise much-needed funds for the charity and also to raise their profile whilst at the same time providing a creative outlet for any writer who appreciates the challenge of putting together a good tale.
The competition will be judged by novelist and popular newspaper and magazine columnist Jane Wenham-Jones and winning entries will be published on the R.A.L. website at the end of the year.
R.A.L. chair Julie Fraser said, ‘This will be a great opportunity for budding writers to exercise their creative skills - and at the same time to help our charity and also those who use our services - whilst taking the opportunity to compete for a useful and worthwhile prize. We will be looking for well presented and well written stories that display the imagination and writing originality of the authors.’
Further details of the competition together with an entry form and the full rules can be found on the R.A.L web site – www.rapeandabuseline.co.uk

Start Night
Once every four to six weeks on Mondays, The Michael Frayn Space hosts Hampstead Theatre’s fast and furious new writing initiative, Start Night.
Hampstead Theatre encourages the submission of new scripts by writers of all levels. Up to five short extracts are presented on the night with minimal set and props. The audience is asked to give written feedback on each extract which is then collated and given to the writers. The idea is that emerging and established writers have the chance to test a new, incomplete script on an audience and use the response they get to improve the play.
The submission deadline for the upcoming Start Night on Monday 17 November 2008 is 29 October 2008.

For more information and submission details please see the Hampstead Theatre website: www.hampsteadtheatre.com
